
From Concept to Comedy: Developing and Writing Your 30-Minute TV Pilot

Taught by writer and AFI instructor Lauren Wells, this course is ideal for aspiring screenwriters eager to break into the world of half-hour comedy television. Over 6 weeks, participants will learn how to develop original concepts, create dynamic and hilarious characters, and craft a compelling pilot script from the ground up. With insider insights and practical guidance, students will leave with a deeper understanding of comedic storytelling—and the tools to bring their own unique voice to the screen.
About the Instructors
Lauren Wells is a screenwriter whose credits include FX’s What We Do in the Shadows, Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Marvel’s Jessica Jones. Her original pilot FLAT was featured on The 2023 Next List, spotlighting rising voices in television, and she recently adapted Dracula into the Ambie-nominated podcast Mina + Lucy’s Guide to Slaying Dracula. A passionate educator, Lauren teaches at the American Film Institute Conservatory and mentors emerging writers through Sundance Collab and Writing Pad, helping to shape the next generation of comedic and genre-driven storytellers.
